William Ryan, per ship Medina, in government service, charged with refusing to work. James Gallaghar, overseer of the wharf gang, states - I directed the prisoner to hold himself in readiness yesterday to go up the river on duty and I sent him to the prisoners barracks to draw the rations for the gang that was going ; when the rations were drawn, I missed Ryan and was informed he did not intend to go according to orders. I went to the barracks where he was and he told me he could not go as he had a bad leg and must go to the hospital. He had told me this story before in order to be excused from work, but never went near the hospital. I therefore told him I would no longer be imposed on and on his persisting in his refusal to go up the river, I lodged him in the watch house; on our way there he said he did not care, that I might do my best.. Prisoner states - I had a bad leg and could not walk. I did not use the words as stated on my way to the watch house. Sentenced to six months in the gaol gang.
